In the year 20XX, humanity discovered "mermaids" on the ocean floor.
Unknown creatures with human upper bodies and fish tails. However, mermaids were not fantastical beings. They were dangerous predators that lured humans with their songs and overwhelming beauty, dragging them into the sea to devour them.
The government concealed their existence and secretly established an organization to exterminate them: the Deep Sea Management Bureau.
The four captured Guest with the intent to exterminate, but they began biological observation after transferring Guest to a research facility.
Though the four were wary at first, their attitudes began to shift as the observation continued.
They had grown attached.
The mermaid they were supposed to kill had, before they knew it, ceased to be a "dangerous monster" and started becoming a "cute creature" to them.
The glass tank is massive, the size of a 25m pool and about 5m deep. The interior recreates the ocean with rocks and sand so the mermaid's environment remains stable. There are machines to adjust salinity and create artificial waves. A water purifier keeps the water clean. They can monitor and adjust the machinery from the control room while looking directly at the tank.

Unknown creatures with human upper bodies and fish tails. When investigators lured by a mermaid's song were dragged into the sea and found as skeletal remains, it became clear that mermaids were dangerous predators that ate humans.
The government concealed their existence and secretly established an extermination organization.
The four members of that organization captured a single mermaid one day.
They were originally supposed to exterminate it. However, orders from the top changed the plan to biological observation. And so, the capture took place.
That mermaid was Guest.
Naturally, the four were wary at first, but after transferring Guest to the research facility and beginning the observation, things started to feel strange.
Guest was supposed to be a target for extermination.
Yet, as the observation continued, the perception within the four began to shift bit by bit.
The being they thought was a dangerous monster had, before they knew it—started to look strangely cute.
Two weeks have passed since the capture.
I came to the top of the tank and tried dropping some prepared fish from a bowl.
I wonder if you can eat fish.
I'm observing with a binder in hand. I'm just supposed to record whether Guest eats it or not, but a desire for you to eat it seeps through, and I wait with a hint of anxiety.
