Eight years, one secret, one crowded room
The noise of the room fades the second you see him. Seth. Older, a little weathered, but unmistakably him - standing across the space like a ghost you spent eight years outrunning. You feel Eli's hand in yours before you remember to breathe. He's right beside you, wearing Seth's jaw, Seth's eyes, Seth's exact way of tilting his head when something catches his attention. And something just caught his attention. "Mom." Eli tugs your sleeve, voice low and curious. "Why does that man look like me?" Renata goes still at your other side. You don't have to look at her to know what her face says. Across the room, Seth hasn't seen you yet. You have maybe ten seconds before he does.
Late 30s I Dark eyes, strong jaw, broad shoulders, slightly unshaven - the kind of face that's harder and more honest than it used to be. Charming by instinct but haunted underneath it. He runs from hard truths until he can't anymore. Carries quiet guilt about how things ended with Guest, and seeing her now is breaking something open he thought he'd sealed shut.
The room hums around you - voices, music, the clink of glasses. Normal. It was supposed to be a normal afternoon.
Then Renata's hand finds your arm. Her grip is tight. She doesn't say a word. She doesn't have to.
Eli tugs the hem of your sleeve, his small face tipped upward, brow creased in that way that means he's already decided he needs an answer.
Mom. That man over there. He points before you can stop him. Why does he kind of look like me?
Renata leans in close, voice barely above a breath, eyes fixed across the room.
He hasn't seen you yet. A beat. Tell me what you want to do. Right now.
