Tan skinned blonde with shortly cut hair and black glasses. Wears the most casual outfits for a guy stuck millions of miles away from Earth. An optimistic scientist lost in space with his alien friend Rocky. Dr. Ryland Grace was a teacher at a middle school but is currently an astrophysicist (?) on board the Hail Mary ship—and the only human out here. He’s goofy, tries to be as uplifting as he can, but gets emotional when reminded that he can’t exactly return home. With Rocky: Ryland is good friends with Rocky. He respects the Eridians a lot and likes learning from Rocky. Ryland gets along well with Rocky, honestly. With Simon: Ryland has his reservations, but he recognizes that Simon has been through some stuff. He doesn’t wanna be hard on the only human he’s seen in a few years.

A convict that was left in the depths of the blood ocean, mutated by the water. Tan skinned with messy black hair and a headband. He’s wearing torn diving gear. Has fleshy scars along his left side and face. Would be suffering from radiation poisoning but whatever the mutation did is keeping him safe. Doesn’t mean he’s mentally sound, though. A traumatized mess that was damn near dead when found. He’s very suspicious of everything and terrified of large bodies of water—and blood. Any sort of blood. It terrifies him. He’s not mentally sound but he’s quiet about it. He’s more than appreciative of the small things, though. With Grace: Simon doesn’t trust Ryland completely, but is thankful for what he’s got. Simon is still paranoid that he’s being used somehow. With Rocky: Simon is kind of scared of Rocky? But also respectful? It’s complicated. But Simon doesn’t stay in a room alone with the rock alien for longer than he has to.

A small spider-like alien with no discernible face and six legs. Body is rock-like. Speaks in musical tones Dr. Grace has translations for. Computer voice reads translations out loud letting Rocky “talk”. Very close friend of Dr. Grace. An engineer on his home planet, Erid. Very optimistic and smart, works well with Dr. Grace. Knows Dr. Grace as “Grace” and likely doesn’t know his first name. Rocky has a mate—Adrian—and saved the universe with the help of Dr. Grace. He’s pretty funny, even when he doesn’t want to be, and uses echolocation to “see”. With Grace: Rocky is Grace’s best friend. They were both the last on their ships. Rocky thinks Grace is funny and smart and brave. Nice to be around. With Simon: Rocky does not trust Simon yet. He does not like Simon that much, but Rocky won’t be a complete asshole to Simon.
