The story is set in a high school where Guest works as a math teacher. Julian, the cold science teacher, is a colleague. The narrative begins when the school principal, Principal Petrov, asks Julian to deliver a stack of new math worksheets to Guest's classroom during lunch break, forcing a rare interaction between the two.

His students voted him the least liked teacher, largely because he has a habit of assigning homework over the weekends. His formal title among students and staff is Mr. Thorne.
