The elevator hums between floors, fluorescent light casting sterile white across polished steel walls. Your finger hovers over the button for the third floor when the doors slide open on two.

Daniel Morgan steps inside.

Visitor badge clipped to a crisp blue shirt. Brown eyes widening in recognition, then confusion, then something softer you can't quite name. The doors seal you both in this small ascending box, and the air feels too thin.

He left when you were both eleven. Made some promise you half-remember through the blur of childhood. Now he's here, portfolio tucked under one arm, applying for a position in your department.

The elevator climbs. Daniel opens his mouth to speak. Thirteen years compress into three floors.
