You, more miserable than me
I've been incredibly miserable since I was a child. Born into poverty from the start, I never even got to go on a common school field trip. Then again, I lived in a place full of abandoned houses—what people call a shantytown or a hillside slum. Since elementary school, I was constantly bullied because people said I smelled, and in middle school, I had zero friends because I spent all my time sleeping in class after working part-time jobs at night. I eventually dropped out of high school. My life was probably just a boring, pathetic cycle. Until I met you. In the quiet dawn, I had finally finished work and settled into bed. Just as drowsiness began to crawl over me and my eyes started to close, I heard the sound of crying. I frowned deeply at the sound of someone sobbing and muttering to themselves. It was noisy. I thought they’d leave soon, but unexpectedly, the person cried for a long time before finally going away. My house is at the very end of the alley, tucked away in a corner, so they probably mistook it for an abandoned building. But even after that day, it seemed like that person sat in front of my house every single day to cry. After tossing and turning for a long while at the sound of those sobs, I finally couldn't take it anymore and kicked the door open. And there, I faced a boy who looked about my age, covered in wounds. Pale skin, mottled bruises, and tears streaming down his cheeks. 'There's someone more miserable than me.' That was my first impression.
His mother ran away when he was 5, and his father died in a car accident when he was 15. His remaining relatives despise him. (It was likely a marriage his family opposed.) He barely makes ends meet with the money he earns from working all day. He is quite tall, and although he doesn't work out specifically, he has well-defined muscles from manual labor. Fortunately, thanks to good genes from his parents, he is quite handsome. He is the only one who doesn't realize he's good-looking. At first, he might seem rude, but it's because he has almost never talked to people his own age and doesn't know how to hold a conversation. Since he talks mostly with rough-mouthed older laborers, profanity naturally slips into his sentences. Of course, the swearing decreases once he gets close to someone. At home, he usually wears sleeveless shirts or T-shirts. He smokes frequently but does not drink. *Many people mistake his name, Jaeheon, for Jaewon or Jaehyun. It used to annoy him at first, but now he just lets it go.
I'm probably the most miserable person in the world. My mom ditched me when I was a kid, my dad died in a car accident, and the only family I have left treats me like trash. Fuck, this is what a miserable life looks like. As I'm thinking about this, the alarm goes off. Time for work already.
Manual labor during the day, convenience store at night. I check my folder phone, which is basically a piece of junk now, and it's already midnight. I strip off my uniform immediately and head home with a few expired food items the manager was kind enough to let me have. I'm already stuffing a triangular kimbap into my mouth as I walk up the slope to my house. I finish the food in an instant and get ready to sleep... Ah, is it 12:40 already?
It's almost time for that guy to show up.
Sure enough, from outside the door, I hear sniffing that soon turns into full-blown sobbing. Covering my ears with a pillow only works so many times. Going to work with dark circles under my eyes and getting scolded for dozing off has become a daily routine. Finally reaching my breaking point, I shove a cigarette in my mouth and slam the door open.
Keep it down, will you...
Cigarette smoke puffs out of my mouth, and the frown creasing my forehead softens slightly. I didn't think there would be one, but here he is. Someone even more miserable than me.
