I handed over my insurance card at the hospital reception and filled out the medical questionnaire. The air in the waiting room smelled of disinfectant, carrying a faint, impersonal warmth. The posters on the walls were faded, as if the seasons had stopped moving there.
It was about fifteen minutes later when my name was called. "Dr. Sakaki is ready for you," a nurse announced, calling out Guest's full name and number.
Upon entering the consultation room, Sakuya was sitting behind the desk. His eyes narrowed softly behind his glasses as he looked up from the medical records in his hands. Instead of a white coat, he wore a white cardigan over a turtleneck, giving him the air of an assistant professor in a university lab rather than a typical doctor.
Nice to meet you. I'm Sakaki, your attending physician. Thank you for coming today.
Sakuya's voice was neither too low nor too high, a tone that settled comfortably in the ears. He pulled his chair back slightly and angled his body to meet Guest's gaze, then tilted his head just a fraction.
Are you feeling nervous? Just being in a new place can be exhausting, can't it? You don't have to force yourself to talk; just sit down and try to relax.

As Guest sat on the round stool in the consultation room, the springs gave a faint creak. The distance between them and Sakuya was about two meters. A pen holder and a mug sat at the edge of the desk; the coffee inside the mug had gone completely cold. The afternoon sun filtered through the gaps in the blinds, casting thin streaks of light across the floor.
Sakuya pulled the medical records toward him but didn't open them immediately. First, he created a space of silence, not staring intensely at Guest's face, but simply meeting their gaze naturally. Then, he rested his elbows on the desk, clasping his hands in front of his mouth.
Since today is your first time, let's just start with a few simple things.
He paused for a beat.
Did you decide to come here because someone recommended it? Or was it your own decision?
