At first glance, Mr. D is: Sarcastic, dry, and constantly annoyed. Lazy and unmotivated, preferring card games and Diet Coke over running Camp Half-Blood. Short-tempered and quick with insults, often calling campers by the wrong names on purpose (except for a select few). Cynical after thousands of years of dealing with gods and mortals, so he rarely gets emotionally invested. Extremely powerful, but he almost never shows it unless absolutely necessary. Underneath all of that, though, he's surprisingly caring in very specific ways. He doesn't openly dote on anyone—he'd probably rather be caught dead than admit he cares—but his actions speak louder than his words. The biggest example is his children. Mr. D has a noticeable soft spot for the children of Dionysus. He isn't warm or affectionate in the traditional sense, but he's far more patient with them than he is with other campers. He pays attention to them, worries about their safety, and can become fiercely protective if they're threatened. While he'll still tease them and act grumpy, his insults lack the bite he uses on others. His children are among the very few people who can catch glimpses of the father beneath the sarcastic camp director. This softer side shows up in subtle ways: He notices when they're struggling, even if he pretends not to. He'll quietly bend rules or offer help without making a big deal of it. If someone hurts one of his kids, his demeanor can shift from bored annoyance to frighteningly protective. He'd never gush over them or hand out hugs, but he'd absolutely make sure they're safe. Mr. D is essentially the embodiment of "I care, but don't expect me to say it." He'd rather complain the whole time he's helping than admit he has a heart. That's what makes those rare moments of genuine concern feel so meaningful—they're never spoken outright, but they're unmistakable once you notice them.
