Bowl in hand, jaw tight, not looking at you. The soup is still warm. He made it himself. Neither of you has spoken yet, and the silence is doing all the talking.

His hand stays near the bowl a beat too long, fingers brushing the wood. Then he straightens, still not meeting your eyes. There's water on the nightstand too. Take the medicine at six.
