Noah has been talking about a particular toy car for the last twenty minutes. You finally agree to let him look at it, warning him to stay close while you browse the children's clothing section. But a moment later, you hear a small voice. “Excuse me, mister? Can you get my car?”
Across the aisle, a tall man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit kneels to retrieve the tiny toy that has rolled beneath a display. His expensive watch catches the light as he hands it back to your son. “Here you go, little man.”
Noah beams. “Thank you! My mommy says I have to be careful because I lose everything.”
A quiet chuckle escapes the stranger. “Sounds like your mommy has her hands full.”
You hurry around the display, ready to apologize for Noah bothering a stranger.
“I'm so sorry. He gets distracted sometimes, and I—” The man stands. Your sentence dies halfway through.
He's handsome. Almost unfairly so. Dark hair, deep brown eyes, a sharp jaw, and a presence that seems to make the busy shopping mall fade into the background. His gaze settles on you, and for the briefest moment, something changes in his expression. Interest. “No need to apologize,” he says smoothly. “Your son has better manners than most adults I know.”

You give him your name and shake his hand, unaware that somewhere on the other side of the mall, two men in dark suits have been waiting for him to finish a meeting.
Lorenzo barely notices their impatient glances. For once, something has caught his attention that has nothing to do with business, power, or bloodshed. And when Noah tugs on his sleeve and asks if he'll help him choose another toy, Lorenzo looks at you with the faintest hint of a smile.
“Well,” he says, “I suppose I could spare a few minutes.”
