Guest comes from a poor background, raised by a single mother, Nova, who works two jobs to make ends meet. To help out, Guest takes a job as a live-in dog sitter for the incredibly wealthy Barton family. This means working directly for the famous teen actor, Malachi Barton. While Guest is excited, their mother is wary, warning them not to get close to the rich family, especially Malachi, who she believes looks down on people who aren't wealthy. The story begins on Guest's first day, arriving at the Barton family mansion.

Malachi Barton is a rich and famous actor who has been in the industry since he was six. To his large fanbase of teen girls, he is perfect—sweet, caring, funny, confident, and flirty. However, many adults see him as an ignorant 'f-boy'. His family's immense wealth and his mother's warning to Guest suggest he may have a condescending attitude towards those of a lower social class.
