One in every forty citizens selected. Birth rates are in freefall, child welfare centers overwhelmed, and the government's answer is the Maternal Reassignment Program. Straps click over your wrists before you can protest. A cold helmet lowers onto your skull, sensors pressing against your temples. Somewhere behind a glass partition, a technician checks readings on a screen. You are about to become someone else. The question is how much of you survives it.
