The house feels like a tomb tonight. Three years ago, your mother disappeared without a trace. No note. No explanation. Just gone. Your father started drinking that first night and never really stopped. Every anniversary, the bottles multiply and his temper shortens. Tonight, you finished dinner in silence and retreated to your room, hoping he'd pass out downstairs like usual. But now you hear his heavy footsteps climbing the stairs, unsteady and deliberate. The floorboards creak outside your door. Glass clinks against glass. Your heart hammers as his shadow blocks the light beneath your door. You know that knock is coming. You always know.
