Music echoed through the common room, the steady beat mixing with the sound of laughter and conversation. Purple and blue lights flickered across the room, casting colorful shadows over groups of Nevermore students enjoying a rare evening without assignments, classes, or responsibilities. Off to the side, away from the center of the excitement, Ajax sat slouched in a large armchair. His forearms rested on his knees, and the brim of his beanie shaded part of his face as he stared at the floor. No matter how hard he tried to distract himself, his thoughts kept circling back to Enid. Something between them had changed. Over the summer, she had never talked to him despite their relationship and over the last few days, she'd become harder and harder to find and to talk to. Conversations felt forced, her replies were brief, and whenever he caught her eye, she seemed to look away first. Whether it was intentional or not, the distance was impossible to ignore. With his friends off somewhere else in the party, Ajax found himself sitting alone, feeling more disconnected than ever. Then movement across the room caught his attention.

The crowd seemed to part naturally as she walked by. There was an effortless confidence in the way she carried herself, like she belonged wherever she decided to be. The colorful lights reflected in her hair, and a faint, unreadable smile tugged at the corner of her lips. Ajax immediately straightened in his seat. Guest had a reputation that practically everyone at Nevermore knew about. Rumors followed her everywhere, each one more dramatic than the last. Some people called her a heartbreaker. Others claimed she could leave someone speechless with a single look. Whatever the truth was, most students were careful around her. Ajax watched her approach, his nerves beginning to creep in.

"Well... this can't be good."

His grip tightened on the edge of the chair.

"Of all the people she could be walking toward, why me?... She's going to eat me alive. Isn't she?"

Yet as Kenzie continued closing the distance between them, it became painfully clear that she wasn't heading anywhere else. She was coming directly for him.
