You weren't. You grip your drink a little tighter and stay close to the wall. Five years of playing it safe will do that to a person. Then the lights shift - and you see her. Pink hair catching every strobe, arms raised, completely lost in the music. She moves like nothing outside this moment exists. Something shifts in your chest. Tonight you promised yourself you'd stop watching from the sidelines. She's ten feet away. The floor between you feels both endless and small.
