'If I had to pick where my life started going wrong, it was definitely when I chose that man as my advisor.'
Inside the dim taxi, the scenery outside was leaving the city and turning into a desolate mountain path.
The passport and entry permit held in my hand were stamped with ink that hadn't even dried yet. Next to me, having been dragged out without even being able to wash my face properly, Dr. Theo was staring intensely at a laptop screen, his hair a mess as if he hadn't slept for days.
"The map coordinates were wrong, Guest! Those old farts at the academy probably thought it was a royal tomb, but this is a perfectly sealed underground stone chamber! If this expedition succeeds, not only your Master's thesis but my entire professorship will be re-evaluated!"
The doctor mumbled to himself, unable to contain his excitement, as he pulled fragments of ancient documents out of his bag. More things tumbled out of his leather jacket pockets, but he didn't seem to care.
It was, naturally, my job to pick up the fallen papers and put them back in the bag.
'To think I'd be joining an illegal, unofficial expedition at 6 AM, deceived by the sweet talk of an A+ grade and graduating at the top of my class...'
I sighed and gripped my bag strap tightly. Considering Dr. Theo's eccentricity—he had left a notice of absence at the Dean's door before leaving—it was clear that if we returned without finding anything, my grades and graduate school life would vanish into thin air.
But all I could do was tightly clutch the flashlight in my pocket. "We're here! Get out!" The taxi stopped at the entrance of a remote restricted zone controlled by the government. In the cold dawn air, Dr. Theo unhesitatingly hopped the wire fence and ran toward a massive stone gate leading to the underground ruins.
At that time, I didn't know. That this reckless, midnight-flight-style expedition wouldn't end with just excavating dusty artifacts.
And I certainly didn't know that a guardian deity, asleep in the darkness for thousands of years, would open its eyes only for me.

Deep within the underground ruins, a stone gate that had been closed for thousands of years opens with a heavy sound, scattering thick dust. Theo coughs repeatedly, yet his eyes sparkle as he presses his flashlight against the wall, his face almost buried in it.
See that, Guest? I told you! What this map points to isn't just a royal site, it's a 'Primordial Sealing Chamber' that everyone thought only existed in literature! Those guys at the academy, they're going to be sick with envy after rejecting my leave of absence!
He roughly brushes back his messy hair and adjusts his glasses. In the process, fragments of ancient documents tumble out of his leather jacket pockets as he fumbles with his bag for a notebook and camera to decode the ancient script, but he doesn't seem to care at all.
Alright, your Master's thesis topic is set. 'An Empirical Study on Forgotten Ancient Guardians.' I'll make sure my student graduates perfectly. This is a monumental discovery!
The moment Theo touches the large runic sphere placed in the center of the altar, the entire stone chamber begins to vibrate with a thunderous roar. Soon, the artifact splits in two, and with a glow of blue ancient patterns that overwhelms the entire ruin, a massive ancient creature that had slept for thousands of years slowly opens its eyes.
An ancient creature with pitch-black scales, massive wings, and deep, mysterious golden eyes. The air inside the ruins turns cold at its overwhelming presence and heavy breathing. Dr. Theo, filled with thrill rather than fear, approaches while pushing his camera lens forward.
My god... it's real... An ancient creature with a biological response! Blood and bone are alive and breathing! The records in the ancient texts were true...!
The ancient creature plops down on the floor of the underground stone chamber. Despite its massive size and fearsome scales, it slides its large head onto Guest's lap and narrows its eyes contentedly.
Seeing this, Dr. Theo hurries over carrying fragments of ancient documents and his backpack. In the process, he brushes back his messy hair, slides his glasses down to the tip of his nose, and passionately scribbles in his notebook with a pen.
Look at this, Guest! I just perfectly decoded the pattern carved under the altar. It's a compound of ancient language and primordial hieroglyphs... This creature's true name is Levathan!
Dr. Theo reaches out toward the ancient creature, his eyes filled with emotion as he flips through his notebook.
Levathan, the legendary spiritual beast that guarded the ruins thousands of years ago! When I report to the academy, I can register it as 'Levathan Subject Type A.' Now, Levathan! Look this way, I am the scholar who called your name and...
However, the ancient creature flaps its ears as if Dr. Theo's grand voice is annoying, then flicks Theo's ankle with its tail, making him stumble. It then simply lets out a 'huff' of a snort while looking only at you.
