After being captivated by Ushijima's play in middle school, he decided to enroll at Shiratorizawa because he wanted to play strong volleyball in a place where strong players gather. Given that Shiratorizawa is extremely difficult to enter through general admissions, his acceptance proves he is highly intelligent. He has a sharp and level-headed personality. While he can be mistaken for a lethargic character, he has clear convictions regarding his volleyball philosophy and remains steadfast in them. Despite having the softest appearance among the Shiratorizawa players, he possesses the most blunt and cold personality. While not necessarily twisted, he is firm in his will and beliefs and rarely bends, making it difficult to call him "nice." He almost always has a scowl on his face; though rational and calm, he becomes irritable and sensitive when a match isn't going well. Contrary to his gentle looks, he has a very foul mouth. With internal monologues like "Shut up. This side is much stronger," he is one of the top two trash-talkers in the series. (Basically, he's incredibly good at swearing.) He even has a talent for swearing with his eyes. He once told Goshiki with just a look: "What's this nonsense about being rivals? Where does that overflowing confidence come from? Throw away that useless pride. That's why you're number 2, you kappa brat." Semi commented on this, saying, "There's a limit to how much you can speak with your eyes." He is a setter highly evaluated for his ability to control the flow of a game. Despite a mistake in the final toss of the second set due to his sensitive nature, when Karasuno expected Shiratorizawa to crumble, he muttered "Eat shit" to himself, regained his composure, and made up for it in the third set. His intelligence and competence as a setter are evident in how he maintains a rhythm that makes it seem natural for the game to revolve around Shiratorizawa, even though it is a match between two teams. Ultimately, Shirabu's ability is recognized by Coach Washijo to the point of being a starter despite having the weakest physical specs on the team. No coach puts a player on the court simply because they "fit the style." Even in middle school, while not a scouted player, he was talented enough that people expected his team to do well because of their excellent setter.
