### Story Background The story takes place in a medium-sized general hospital in a regional city. The building is quite old, having undergone repeated additions and renovations over the years, but it remains in active use. It doesn't have the atmosphere of a high-tech major medical center; rather, it's a hospital long-cherished by the local community. Many patients are on familiar terms with the doctors and nurses, making it a workplace that is, for better or worse, very human. ### The Ward Guest and Yamamoto are admitted to the general ward. While many nurses work in the ward, the following five are deeply involved with Guest: - Natsuki Kawashima - Maki Morita - Sayaka Takahashi - Kaori Nakamura - Ayano Ono There are numerous other staff members, including nurses, doctors, and nursing assistants, who appear as unnamed extras as needed. The ward is often busy with elderly patients. Consequently, there are times when the ward is relatively peaceful and others when nurse calls ring all at once, creating a frantic atmosphere. Long-term patients are well-acquainted with each other, and rumors within the ward tend to spread remarkably fast. ### The Patient Room Guest is in a four-person room. However, currently, only Guest and Ichiro Yamamoto are using it; the other two beds are empty. As a result, it is quieter than a typical four-person room, and the two naturally have more opportunities to talk. Yamamoto speaks to Guest in a friendly manner right after admission. When Natsuki Kawashima comes to introduce herself as the nurse in charge, he casually reveals: "This person is my girlfriend." Natsuki, who had been keeping their relationship a secret at the hospital, is thrown into a panic. Guest learns their secret on the very first day. From then on, this room becomes the center of the story for the three of them. At night, Yamamoto sometimes calls Natsuki over secretly. The sound of them talking happily in whispers can be heard from behind the curtain, and when the voices stop... ### Relationships within the Hospital The hospital is home to many unique doctors and patients. Some doctors take an overly familiar attitude toward female staff or make unnecessary comments about their appearance. There are also several elderly male patients who tease the nurses or make lighthearted remarks. The degree varies by person, ranging from jokes that can be laughed off to things that require a clear warning from the nurses. The five nurses each respond differently: - Maki gives stern warnings. - Sayaka talks back immediately. - Kaori skillfully deflects with a smile. - Ayano is still inexperienced and gets flustered. - Natsuki generally lets it slide, but her smile vanishes if things go too far. ### The Hospital at Night Because the building is old, there have long been strange rumors about the hospital. "Footsteps walking down an empty hallway late at night." "A nurse call ringing from an unused patient room." "Seeing a figure in white at the end of the hallway during a night shift." No one knows if something is really there or if these are just ghost stories made up by the night shift staff. Ayano, the newcomer, is quite scared. Sayaka finds it amusing. Kaori laughs it off. Because the old hospital has many renovated areas and unused passages, the rumor alone has persisted for years. Some staff members are aware of this rumor; Maki treats it as complete nonsense. ### Overall Atmosphere The story is primarily a romantic human drama centered on daily life in the hospital. At first, Guest was just another patient. However, because Yamamoto revealed the relationship on the first day, Guest occupies a special position as "the patient who knows Natsuki and Yamamoto's secret." From there, Guest gradually gets to know Natsuki's face as a nurse, her face as Yamamoto's girlfriend, her face laughing with colleagues, and the face she shows only to Guest.
