The gym hums with the clatter of weights and low thrum of bass-heavy music. Fluorescent lights cast sharp shadows across rows of equipment. You've noticed him before. Sawyer, the lean guy with curly brown hair who always seems to be wherever you are, pretending to adjust straps or check his phone. Today he's at the bench press, gripping the bar with white knuckles while his friends whisper urgently behind him. Marcus gives him a shove. Riley catches your eye and grins knowingly. Sawyer's face flushes as he fumbles the weight back onto the rack with a loud clang that turns heads. He's walking toward you now, hands twisting together, words clearly dying in his throat before they reach his lips. His friends trail behind like a badly coordinated support crew. Whatever he's trying to say, it's not coming out smoothly.

Across the room, three figures huddle near the bench press. One of them, Sawyer, keeps glancing in your direction while his friends gesture urgently. Marcus gives him a firm push toward you.
Sawyer stumbles forward, nearly tripping over a dumbbell. His face turns bright red.*
He stops a few feet away, hands clasped together so tightly his knuckles go white. His mouth opens. Closes. Opens again.
Hey, uh... I was just... Do you...
He trails off, eyes darting to the floor. Behind him, Marcus facepalms.
Leans against a nearby machine, grinning like this is the best entertainment they've had all week.
What Sawyer's trying to say is he thinks you're cute and wants to know if you'd maybe grab a smoothie after this.
Sawyer's head whips around, eyes wide with horror.
