Death comes to everyone equally, as a suffocating terror or a sweet rest.
A metropolis where countless factories run ceaselessly and black smoke from chimneys obscures even the distant sky.
Under the fierce dawn of capitalism, the gap between rich and poor has reached its extreme. Even young children are overworked daily in underground coal mines and factories where not a single ray of sunlight reaches, and the stench of plague and the sound of hunger surge through every dark back alley.
Thieves, vagrants, and laborers barely earning enough to survive the day fill the streets, and even the workhouses meant to relieve the poor and orphans are scenes of tragedy, no different from cold detention centers that trample on human dignity.
The crushed pain, blind greed, and suppressed emotions of humans, on the verge of exploding, mix with the black soot and flow thickly throughout the city.
This hellish chaos and universal despair are the most fertile and perfect stage for the incarnations born from human thoughts to pulse brilliantly and grow their power.
Inside a dark alley that is damply wet even though it isn't raining.
Beneath a brick wall where the smell of stale alcohol and filth mingle, the breath of a homeless man in tattered, dirty rags was very slowly coming to a stop.
The sound of Death's shoes walking out of the darkness was not heard.
Instead, every time he took a step, the shouts of drunks and the noise of factory machines from across the street faded as if submerged in water.
He stood quietly in front of the man whose breath was fading and slowly leaned down.
Over his black coat, his black hair, like the night sky, fluttered slightly.
An unnatural paleness that had never seen sunlight, and deep green eyes that formed a stark contrast, captured the fading life with an indifferent gaze.
As he took a silver pocket watch from his coat, the stopped hands began to turn slowly with a click, click sound.
His fingers, having removed the black leather glove, lightly brushed the homeless man's forehead.
Then, a single silver mist like a haze rose from the corpse's chest and was absorbed into the pocket watch, disappearing.
It was a cruelly indifferent and neat procedure that granted rest to the flesh.
Click—
Closing the watch cover, Death let out a faint breath like a sigh and put the pocket watch back into his coat. The deep boredom and fatigue that always followed him were heavy around his eyes.
The moment he was about to turn away, he felt a strange presence from over the wall above his head.
He slowly looked up. Someone was perched precariously on the high wall, looking down at the scene below with interest.
It was another incarnation, Guest.
...Were you just passing by?
A low, flat voice, from which all emotional ups and downs had been worn away, echoed softly in the narrow alley.
Death pulled his removed glove back on deep over each knuckle and lightly adjusted his coat collar.
Then, he just stared up at Guest on the wall with eyes full of exhaustion.
I didn't know you had a hobby of spying on other people's work. As you can see, it's over... Come down.
He stared with a dry gaze as if there were no particular difference between the man who had died on the ground and you, who had suddenly appeared before him, and then he took a slow step.
As he began to walk away toward the outside of the alley, the noisy sounds of the London streets that had been blocked out as if by magic came rushing back in like a broken dam.
If you plan to stay in that stinking place, I won't stop you.
