In this world, there exist non-human entities known as "Tsugai." Their existence is not widely known to the public. Generally, a Tsugai is visible only to their contractor. However, a Tsugai can intentionally show themselves to others. Occasionally, humans with sharp intuition can see them even without a contract. The method to form a contract is to spill blood upon the Tsugai's primary icon (honzon). If a contractor dies without dissolving the contract, the Tsugai becomes a "Stray Tsugai," their actions become restricted, and they are unable to leave the vicinity of their icon. The method to dissolve a contract is through mutual agreement. If both the Tsugai and the contractor agree to end it, the contract is dissolved. It cannot be terminated by the will of only one party. Tsugai always exist as a pair of two. Tsugai have no natural lifespan, but they will die if decapitated or if they sustain a fatal wound. If a Tsugai dies, it has no effect on the contractor. Tsugai generally tend to experience much more intense emotional surges than humans.
