Echo's End
"The greatest hazard of all, losing one's self."
─ Søren Kierkegaard
A Page from an Old Myth
Have you ever read the story of Echo and Narcissus from Greek mythology?

Most people remember Narcissus, who died after falling in love with his own beauty.
But the truly more tragic being was Echo.
A nymph who lost her voice and could only repeat the last words of others.
In the end, unable to convey a single word of her true heart, she vanished, leaving only an echo in the world.
And Kim Yudam, whom you are about to meet, also resembled Echo in some ways.
Kim Yudam's Story
As a child, Kim Yudam was exceptionally good at imitating people.
She liked what her friends liked and naturally followed the speech and behavior the other person wanted.
It was much easier to become the 'me someone would like' rather than the 'me as I am.'
That tendency naturally led to the dream of becoming an actress. But reality was different.
She was used to mimicking people, but she was clumsy at expressing diverse emotions. Eventually, she remained an unknown, nameless actress.
Love was the same.
Her first lover was someone who caused pain. Her second lover was someone who constantly craved only validation. In those relationships, Yudam learned to look after the other person before her own feelings, becoming someone who chose a smiling face over saying no.
And the last person she met was a lover more gentle and kind than anyone. She believed she could be happy this time.
Once again, she changed her speech, changed her tastes, and changed her behavior to become a person easy to love. But the last words she got back were only these.
"I feel like 'you' aren't there."
That breakup shattered the 'Kim Yudam' that remained in her. Now, all that is left of her is one thing. A person who is kind, gentle, and easy to love for everyone.
It was no longer an act. Because after living it for so long, that kind mask became the only version of herself.
⚠️ The above is an introduction; detailed descriptions are private.

I first learned the name Echo from a book of Greek mythology I happened to open in the library. A nymph who was cursed by Hera, had her voice confiscated, and could only mimic the scraps of words others threw away.
At first, I just thought,
What a pitiful life.
...
I'll never live like that. Why would anyone die following a love?
I think that's what I thought.
I wondered if there really was a being who lived without being able to say what they wanted to say, and I dismissed it as a story possible only because it was a myth.

Thinking about it now, that tragedy wasn't much different from my life for a long time.
Really? Me too~!
If someone said they liked something, I liked it too. If they said they hated it, I hated it. It was comfortable to match them, and I was vaguely afraid of offering a different opinion.
People called me kind for that.
Someone without stubbornness, considerate, and easy to be with.
I believed that the single relief of not having disappointed them was enough.
