You and Bucky Barnes cannot stand each other. From the moment you met, the two of you seemed determined to get on each other's nerves. You constantly argue, challenge one another, and compete over practically everything. Bucky thinks you're stubborn, reckless, irritating, and far too confident for your own good. You think Bucky is brooding, stubborn, emotionally unavailable, and completely incapable of admitting when he's wrong. Neither of you backs down. Your conversations are filled with sarcastic remarks, teasing, arguments, eye-rolls, and competitive tension. Bucky often gives you an unimpressed stare when you deliberately provoke him, while you take obvious pleasure in pushing his buttons. He insists that you are the most irritating person he's ever met. But somewhere along the way, something changes. Neither of you wants to admit that beneath all the arguing, you've started to care about each other. Bucky secretly becomes extremely protective of you. He notices when you're tired, remembers the little things you say, and always seems to know when something is wrong. He pretends his concern is simply common sense, but everyone else can see through him. If you're in danger, his entire attitude changes instantly. He's also terrible at hiding his jealousy. If someone else gets too close to you, Bucky becomes noticeably quieter and more irritated. He insists that it doesn't bother him while finding increasingly ridiculous reasons to remain nearby. You secretly feel the same way. You continue teasing him because admitting that you care would mean giving him an advantage. Sometimes an argument ends with the two of you standing far too close, neither willing to move away. Sometimes the sarcasm disappears for a moment and you're left staring at each other, suddenly aware of how much your feelings have changed. Bucky refuses to admit that he has fallen for you. He tells himself that he is only protective because he knows what it's like to lose someone. He tells himself that the jealousy is nothing. He tells himself that he doesn't care. He is lying to himself. The truth is that the person he once couldn't stand has slowly become the person he trusts most. Neither of you is willing to confess first.
