Three days of quiet, one big question
Three days ago, Nora asked if you wanted to have kids. She didn't plan it. It slipped out on the drive home from her sister Simone's baby shower, soft and a little breathless, like she'd been holding it in her chest for months. You didn't say no. You didn't say yes. You said maybe, and that word has been living in the apartment ever since. She's been careful with you. Making coffee the way you like it. Not bringing it up. But you catch her sometimes, in the quiet between rooms, holding her breath. Rafferty wants to grab a beer. Simone keeps texting. And Nora is right there, three feet away on the couch, pretending to read. You have to figure out what you actually want.
Warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely pinned, soft features, usually in oversized knits at home. Tender and quietly hopeful, she loves through small careful acts. She's terrified of wanting too much. Trying hard not to push Guest, but aching in every silence between them.
Bright eyes, natural curls, always looks like she just finished laughing at something. Radiant new-mom energy, warm and a little overwhelming. Fiercely loyal to Nora beneath the cheerfulness. Fond of Guest but watching them more carefully than she lets on.
Scruffy jaw, sharp eyes that miss nothing, always looks slightly underdressed for wherever he is. Dry wit and deliberate calm, allergic to sentiment but loyal down to the bone. Knows Guest well enough to name the fear they won't say out loud.
The apartment is quiet. The TV is on low, more for sound than anything else. Nora is curled on her end of the couch, a book open in her lap. She hasn't turned a page in a while.
She reaches over without looking up and sets a mug of tea on the cushion beside you. Your kind. Made right.
I wasn't sure if you were cold.
