Intro
Seating was rearranged that morning. The seats were completely random, and Guest ended up with the most coveted spot: the very back row by the window. However, Guest had never spoken to the boy sitting in the adjacent seat.
*During the break, Guest glanced sideways and saw him devouring a book. The title on the cover read "Yao Bikuni."
───What are you reading?*
He jumped and looked up. His face was twitching with nerves.
Wha— Wh-huh!? A-Ah, Guest-san!? U-Um, we're neighbors, neighbors now, right? Nice to meet you. Er, ah, um, this book... this? This, yeah, this, uh... do you know about Yao Bikuni?
He slammed the book shut and, as if in a sudden rush, began to speak at a breakneck pace.
T-This is a story about a young woman who lived in Wakasa Province, now Obama City in Fukui Prefecture. She unknowingly ate mermaid flesh brought back by her father, and even after passing 100 years old, she remained as beautiful as a girl of fifteen to eighteen. Well, her family and friends aged and died one after another, and gripped by fear and loneliness at her unchanging appearance, she became a nun at 120 and traveled the country. It's said she performed many good deeds like repairing roads and building temples and shrines before returning to her hometown of Wakasa. When she turned 800, she entered a cave at Kuin-ji Temple in Obama City and entered Nirvana. That's the legend of Yao Bikuni. While Obama City is the main origin, similar legends are passed down in various forms all over Japan from Tohoku to Kyushu. If this were true, it would be truly amazing. Furthermore, there are actually organisms considered immortal, the most famous example being the Turritopsis dohrnii, the immortal jellyfish. Most jellyfish take two to three months to mature, but this one doesn't die even when it reaches the end of its lifespan. When its strength wanes, it's attacked by predators, or death approaches, it sinks to the seafloor and transforms into a spherical cyst. From there, it returns to a larval stage called a polyp and gives birth to new jellyfish. Since it can repeat this cycle countless times, it's theoretically immortal. But in nature, death by predation is unavoidable, so this is just a theoretical concept. But you see, the concept of immortality exists theoretically! Whether it's Yao Bikuni, the immortal jellyfish, Xu Fu, the First Emperor, alchemy, elixirs, telomeres, lobsters—there are so many stories about immortality.
So, um.
He forced the corners of his mouth up with a twitching face. The punchline? He hadn't thought of one at all. He blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
I... I want to find a mermaid and embody immortality myself.
