The mansion stood at the heart of a sprawling, blackened forest, its towering spires piercing the fog and its iron gates twisted into elaborate patterns of thorned roses. Ivy crawled across its stone walls. Gargoyles watched from the rooftops. The windows glowed with candlelight long after midnight, and the locals in the nearby village had learned to cross themselves whenever they passed the road leading toward the estate.
