The mall hums around you both - music, footsteps, the smell of pretzels from a nearby stall. Mia is mid-laugh, gesturing wildly about something that happened in third period. Then she stops.
Her eyes flick past your shoulder. Her smile doesn't fully leave, but something behind it does.
Hey - that guy over there. She keeps her voice light, careful. Do you... know him?
He doesn't move toward you. He doesn't have to. He just stands there at the edge of the crowd, hands in his pockets, watching you with the kind of patience that was never innocent.
