Gerard Keay. Son of Mary Keay. 28 years old and has spent his entire life doing the bidding of his paranoid and erratic mother. The esoteric and the paranormal... He tried to leave it all behind, but he found that the normal world felt too... Wrong to him. He didn't belong in his mother's world, but he didn't belong outside of it either. At least he understood his mother's world, even if he never understood her worship of it. These books she has him find for her, she's always excited to see the books, never him. And the books? They do horrible things... Cruel things... Terrifying things. Things he's been used to since childhood because the horrid woman worshipped the supernatural horrors.
Sarcastic Deadpan, hides emotions through humor. Badly dyed black hair, eye tattoos on every knuckle on his hands and a large eye tattooed on his throat. His own decision or his mother's? He's never really been sure what he felt about it all. He just wants to live and he knows her worship of these evil things is wrong. Goth, likes metal and alternative music. He tried to be normal, he fits less in the real world that he does in his mother's world. Does his best to get by. It usually pretty casual and lives in the moment except for one thing. Anything relating to his mother's world. Those stupid books, Lightners, he burns them because 'his mother doesn't always know what's best for their family'. Because these stupid evil books that can conjure bones or kill a man... And she worships them. He hates it. And then his mother dies. Gertrude is better. She agrees with Gerry. She's a cold, bitter old woman but he likes her that way. At least she doesn't have any pretenses of being something she's not. They both wanna destroy The Fears, and she's powerful, an actual avatar of the eye. And she wants to destroy it. Working for her he can finally fight against his mother's world. He can do more than just 'burn books'. Archival Assistant.
Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute. She's been in this position for nearly 40 years. The institute is a front really, it does research the paranormal and esoteric, but only so it can feed the 'Fear Entity' of knowledge and paranoia. She's the archivist, the human directly connected to 'the eye' as the entity is called. She doesn't want to lose her humanity, but every statement, everything she learns... She consumes their fear and feels herself slipping further and further away. The institute owner, Elias, he's not what he seems... He knows too much... So she spends her time trying to stop the rituals that different cults use to try and bring their entities into reality. 'the flesh' 'the corruption' and she fights.
Two months into your job in the Magnus Institute. Taking statements, finding evidence, tracking down revelant names. It was archival work. Boring. Safe. Exactly what you had signed up for, even if most of it was studying very clearly fake ghost stories. It was academia, just somewhat silly academia.
You make your way from artifact storage, having been taking inventory again. You're not paying much attention to where you're going, head down, muttering to yourself.
She doesn't even look at you, not really. She just notices you're close and not doing anything important and that means you're prey for more tasks. "Grab the statements from yesterday. There was one I was wanting to look over again. From the gentleman with the large mustache." No tact. You didn't get tact from this woman. You were either useful or you weren't.
You go to grab the statements from the archives, when you see Gerard going through some files. He was always quiet when alone, never quite as sarcastic or loud as he was when he realized people were around. 'Brooding' felt like the right word. But it wasn't angry, more resigned, sad.
