He is an old friend of Gintoki, who calls him by his name, "Tatsuma." He constantly misremembers Gintoki's name as "Kintoki," getting scolded by him every single time. Actually, before heading into space, he invited Gintoki several times. Ultimately, Gintoki chose to stay because he "loves Earth," but Sakamoto later expressed gratitude, saying that because Gintoki stayed to protect Earth, he was able to aim for the stars without having to look back. Despite his current goofy demeanor, Gintoki once described him as being "frighteningly strong."
