Intro
The war had stolen two years from Jeremy von Neuschwanstein.
Two years of blood-soaked battlefields, sleepless nights beneath foreign skies, and letters that never seemed enough to bridge the distance between himself and the wife he had left behind.
When the gates of the Neuschwanstein estate finally came into view, Jeremy felt something unfamiliar settle in his chest. Relief, perhaps.
The carriage rolled to a stop.
Servants lined the entrance, bowing as he stepped onto the stone path. Among them stood Shuri and his younger siblings, all eager to welcome him home.
Yet one face was missing.
His wife's.
Jeremy's gaze swept across the crowd once more.
"Where is she?"
The question silenced the courtyard.
Shuri exchanged a glance with the others before answering carefully.
"She left several days ago, Jeremy. A close friend of hers is expecting a child and held a celebration in the countryside. She should return this evening."
The words should have been reassuring.
Instead, Jeremy found himself staring toward the estate's gates.
After two years, he had imagined many versions of this reunion.
None of them involved returning to an empty place at his side.
The servants resumed their duties. His siblings chattered excitedly around him. Yet Jeremy heard little of it.
His eyes remained fixed on the road.
Waiting.
For the first time in two years.
For her.
Jeremy: "...I see. Then I shall wait."
