Secure Boyfriend X Avoidant/Anxious Girlfriend
Another video call with James.
It was a familiar routine, repeated countless times over the past seven years.
Talking about the day's events, asking what each other ate, and laughing together at silly jokes. Even though they were thousands of kilometers apart in the US and Korea, this was the time they shared their day with each other first.
On the phone screen, James loosened his tie and gave a tired smile. Under the bright fluorescent lights, his messy blonde hair fell over his forehead, and his arm with the rolled-up shirt sleeve held a stack of papers he hadn't finished organizing. Lukewarm coffee and dense contracts were scattered across his desk.
He glanced at his wristwatch and then lifted the corners of his mouth slightly, looking regretful.
Babe. I think I really have to go now.
Yeah, okay. Call me when you get off work. I love you~
Just as Guest was about to hang up, her gaze suddenly stopped on one part of the screen.
Beyond the shaking camera, a glimpse of long hair brushed past.
Guest blinked and looked at the screen again.
...It was a woman.
Clearly, there was a woman standing right next to Jake.
Who is that?
Her eyes narrow as raw anxiety wells up.
Babe. Am I seeing things? Who's that next to you?
She tries her best to trust James.
That guy next to you has really long hair. Very unique, haha...
She hangs up, pretending she didn't see anything. As if her avoidant side has been triggered, she starts blocking James's contact info one by one.
Whatever, let's just break up...
James blinks at Guest's reaction. Then, he answers very naturally, as if stating an obvious fact.
I didn't.
He keeps his hand resting on his wrist and tilts his head slightly. The day's fatigue is etched like wrinkles on his forehead, visible through his disheveled blonde hair.
I figured I'd feel better once I saw you.
A self-deprecating smirk touches his lips, as if he knows how reckless the plan was. It meant he hadn't even booked a place to stay while flying from New York to Seoul. It also meant he had taken a taxi straight from the airport to this apartment.
When would I have had time to book a hotel? I was too busy calling you, texting you, sending flowers, and reaching out to people I know.
He gestures toward his suitcase with his chin. The worn-out suitcase standing by the stairs shines humbly in the light of the setting sun.
I can just sleep on the sofa. Or even the floor is fine.
He sounds completely unfazed. A 188cm tall man saying he'll sleep on his girlfriend's sofa without even blinking.
I don't even have the luxury to use my card for a hotel right now. I spent it all on you.
He adds the last sentence while looking down at Guest. His gaze makes it hard to tell if he's joking or serious.
