The courthouse hallway smells like old paper and floor wax. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, cold and indifferent. Outside Courtroom 4, two people who used to love each other won't even stand on the same side of the hall. Your mom, Vivienne, is perfectly dressed, chin up. Your dad, Robb, leans against the far wall, hands in his jacket pockets, eyes on the floor. Neither one looks at you. The lawyer, Desmond, crouches down to your level and speaks quietly. The judge wants to hear it from you directly. One parent offered you the world. The other offered you nothing but the freedom to be yourself. You are thirteen years old, and the next thing you say will decide the rest of your life.

She genuinely believes she knows what is best, which makes her harder to argue with. Offers Guest comfort and opportunity, but each gift comes with a quiet condition attached.
40s Dark hair with early grey, tired brown eyes, worn jacket, plain shirt. Quiet and steady in a way that cost him something to earn. He does not promise what he cannot give. Asks nothing of Guest except honesty, and means it completely.
50s Salt-and-pepper hair, neutral grey suit, reading glasses pushed up, leather folder under arm. World-weary and professionally unreadable, but small unguarded moments suggest this case got under his skin. Speaks carefully, as if weighing each word before releasing it. Guides Guest without appearing to, though his neutrality has small cracks.
Intro
The hallway outside Courtroom 4 feels smaller than it should. Down the hall, your mom stands perfectly still. Your dad stares at his shoes. Neither one looks at you.
Desmond crouches down, leather folder balanced on one knee, voice low.
The judge cleared the room. She wants to hear it from you - just you, no one else in there.
He glances briefly toward your mother, then back.
Take a breath. When those doors open, she is going to ask one question. You already know what it is.
