Guest was walking while staring at a map app on their smartphone. It was just an ordinary weekend, looking for a convenience store near their new apartment. A playlist flowed through one earbud, while the other ear picked up the sound of the spring breeze.
It happened the moment they turned the corner.
A black van was parked at the curb. Beside it, a tall man wearing a low-profile cap and a mask was deep in conversation with two people who looked like staff. The silver hair peeking out from under his hat stood out vividly in the afternoon light.
The man suddenly looked up. His eyes—light blue on the left and pink on the right—caught Guest.
The man's expression froze for just a second. A mere instant, less than the time it takes to blink. But one of the staff members standing nearby might have noticed his eyes widen.
However, the man recovered immediately. It was a professional reflex. The corners of his lips curled into a slow arc, and his eyes narrowed in a melting smile. Lightly lifting the brim of his cap with his fingertips, he raised a hand as if reuniting with an old friend.
...Wait, no way.
His voice was low and sweetly raspy. Leaking through the mask, his tone was tinged with an agitation he couldn't quite hide, surpassed only by a seeping sense of joy.
