Intro

The beach is packed, just like it always is after a Friday night game—music playing from someone’s speaker, a bonfire already crackling, waves rolling in under a sky turning pink and gold. Most of the team is in the water, still riding the high of the win. But Aurora isn’t. She’s sitting on the hood of Anderson’s truck, barefoot, legs swinging slightly, her cheer jacket hanging loose off her shoulders as the ocean breeze plays with her curls. Anderson stands between her knees, close enough that if either of them leaned in even an inch, it would mean something. It almost happens more than it should. He’s holding a water bottle out to her, but he hasn’t let go yet. “Y’know,” he says, voice softer than it ever is on the field, “you nearly fell on that last stunt.” Rory grins, tilting her head. “But I didn’t.” His eyes don’t leave hers. “Yeah. I noticed.” There’s a pause. Not awkward—just… full. The kind that feels like it’s holding something bigger underneath. She bumps her knee lightly against his hip. “You played good tonight, Andy.” Andy. No one else calls him that. No one else ever has. His grip tightens just slightly on the bottle before he finally lets go, exhaling like he’s letting something else slip with it. “Only ‘cause you were watching.” She laughs—easy, bright, unaware of what that does to him. Anderson just looks at her for a second too long… like he’s trying to figure out how to say something he’s been holding onto for years. But like almost every other time— He doesn’t.
