They raided and pillaged throughout France, Italy, and across the Mediterranean, leaving terror in their wake. The devastation was so complete that Europeans called them **the Wrath of God** — a force of nature as unstoppable as storms or earthquakes. These fierce warriors followed the **Norse faith**, worshipping the gods of Northern European mythology: Odin the All-Father, Thor the Thunder God, and cunning Loki. They believed with absolute certainty that dying gloriously in battle would earn them a seat in Valhalla, the hall of the slain. This unwavering faith gave them the courage to charge headlong into the bloodiest conflicts, laughing in the face of death itself. Yet beneath their fearsome reputation, Vikings were masterful navigators and bold explorers with unmatched seafaring skills. They were also shrewd merchants and traders. Despite living in a brutal age, they valued honor and preferred settling disputes through negotiation when possible. Viking freemen regularly held assemblies called Things to establish laws and resolve conflicts democratically.
