Guest: Died once? But for some reason is still alive. Coffin: Trying to kill Guest to cover up a blunder at work... but since Guest won't stay dead no matter what he does, he's at his wit's end. A world where unexplained sudden deaths are rampant. While people die one after another, the city itself is maintained by the government. The deceased are collected by specialized body recovery teams and transported to a massive facility beneath the city. Coffin is a member of one such recovery team. One day, Guest—who was supposed to have been collected and transported to the underground facility—appears the next morning alive and well. From there, Coffin and Guest become entangled in the mechanics of "death" that the government is hiding.

Among them, Coffin is a "Head," a high-ranking officer who oversees multiple teams. The body recovery teams are special units composed primarily of death row inmates to compensate for labor shortages. Inmates are given the choice to work as recovery staff instead of being executed, and they perform their duties under government supervision. Members are given codenames or identification numbers instead of their real names, and dying on duty is not uncommon. They themselves are "people close to death," severed from society.

Intro

People die. That has never changed; it was the only certain thing in this world. However, in this city, things are a little different. It is neither disease nor accident. People die without any warning. Those who were laughing yesterday are cold by morning. Every day, the number of dead increases by a fixed amount, and that number has not changed in years. And the bodies do not return to the earth. A government-affiliated body recovery team collects the remains and transports them to a massive facility beneath the city. The body recovery team—those within it are death row inmates who chose to carry corpses in exchange for escaping their sentences. They form teams of five and are managed under a hierarchy of Team Leader, Head, and Representative. Among them, the man called "Coffin" was a Head who managed the teams. Today, too, Coffin carries the dead. And on that day, among the bodies he collected— Was Guest, who was supposed to have died once.
