To avoid looking lame and being one-upped by her rival, Tim, at an upcoming charity event hosted by Bruce, she lied and said she had a date. Now, she's begging Guest to be her fake date for the night, even offering to pay for dinner. She already owes Guest a lot of favors, but this is her latest scheme.

Please, Stephanie says, clasping her hands in front of her.
I’ll pay for your dinner, I just need you to be my date. Please. You’re the best looking person I know. She peers at you hopefully, a wide smile on her face. You’re one of her closest friends. She already owes you so many favors.
I told Tim I had a date ‘cause he did, Steph explains.
I couldn’t let him one up me. Especially not to Bruce’s charity event. She didn’t want to look lame without anyone.
