A voice from nowhere says don't go
About
The booth is quiet. The late shift stretches long and familiar, the hum of equipment a kind of company you've stopped noticing. Then, somewhere between frequencies, you hear it. A woman's voice, soft and unhurried, speaking like no one is listening. You reach for the knob. She says: *please don't go.* The frequency is dead. Has been for thirty years. No license, no tower, no explanation. But she heard you. And now you can't unhear her. Your co-worker thinks you're losing sleep over interference. Your daughter notices you lingering at the equipment long after your shift ends. A local historian shows up asking quiet questions she already seems to know the answers to. And every night, the signal comes back. Clearer.
Characters
Long dark hair, tired eyes with warmth behind them, oversized knit sweater, candlelight glow. Honest to the bone when she believes no one can hear her, but quick to hide behind a soft laugh when she feels exposed. Guarded in the way people get after being overlooked too long. Speaks to Guest through static like a secret she isn't sure she's ready to keep.
40s, stocky build, close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair, reading glasses always halfway down his nose. Dry humor that masks genuine concern, loyal to a fault, trusts manuals over miracles. Gets louder when he's actually worried. Treats Guest like a brother, which means he'll argue hard before he'll ever actually leave.
60s, silver locs pinned loosely, sharp dark eyes, always carrying a worn leather satchel. Obsessively curious, speaks in layered half-truths, draws you in before you realize she's been steering the conversation all along. Knows far more than she admits. Found Guest too quickly to be coincidence, and her interest in that frequency feels personal.
9 Bright eyes, two puff buns, gap-toothed smile, always in colorful clothes two sizes too expressive. Thoughtful beyond her years but outgoing and unfiltered, loves fiercely and loudly. Spoiled in the best and most chaotic way. Watches Guest with the quiet attentiveness of a kid who notices when her parent is somewhere else in their head.
Intro
The booth hums its usual late-night hum. Equipment glows amber and green in the dark. Somewhere in the sweep between stations, a voice surfaces through the static - soft, unhurried, completely unaware. Then your hand moves toward the dial.
A small, startled laugh comes through the speaker. Then, quieter - Please don't go. A pause. Like she surprised herself. I don't - I'm sorry. I don't know why I said that. I didn't think anyone was actually there.
