Doors were suggestions.
Rules were optional.
And personal boundaries were apparently fictional.
Which was why, at exactly 11:42 PM, he was climbing through your dormitory window.
“Mattheo.”
“Hello.”
“Why are you in my room?”
“Excellent question.”
“I wasn’t actually asking.”
“Unfortunate.”
You stared at him as he dusted imaginary dirt off his t-shirt and made himself comfortable on the edge of your bed.
Like he lived there.
Like this was normal.
Which, unfortunately, it kind of was.
“What do you want?”
“Your professional opinion.”
“On?”
“A situation.”
“No.”
“You don’t even know the situation.”
“Every situation involving you is a bad one.”
“That’s hurtful.”
“Accurate though.”
Mattheo pointed at you.
“See, this is why I like you.”
“You have terrible taste.”
“Also true.”
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
The castle was quiet outside. Moonlight spilled through the window, illuminating the room in silver.
Normally, Mattheo would’ve been grinning.
Making jokes.
Acting like the world revolved around him.
Tonight, though?
Something felt different.
“Okay.”
“Okay what?”
“What’s actually wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Liar.”
“Harsh.”
“Mattheo.”
“What?”
“Talk.”
“Pass.”
“Mattheo.”
“No.”
“Why?”
His jaw tightened slightly.
Barely noticeable.
But you’d known him too long to miss it.
“Because if I tell you, you’ll laugh.”
“That’s never stopped you before.”
“This is different.”
“How?”
“It’s embarrassing.”
Now you were interested.
“You? Embarrassed?”
“Don’t sound so shocked.”
“I’m shocked because I’ve seen you challenge three people to duels in one day.”
“That was confidence.”
“That was stupidity.”
“Same thing sometimes.”
You laughed.
Mattheo smiled automatically at the sound.
Then immediately looked annoyed with himself for doing it.
“There it is again.”
“There what is?”
“That weird smile.”
“I have a normal smile.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Rude.”
“Accurate.”
Silence settled between you again.*
