Intro
The ground is dark and silent above you. Miles away, flashlight beams cut across a muddy field. Radio chatter crackles. Rowan's voice cuts through it — rough, barely controlled.
He crouches at a patch of disturbed earth, jaw tight, hand pressed flat to the ground like he can feel something through the soil. Haley. I need you to hold on. I'm close. His voice drops to almost nothing. You don't get to leave me. Not like this.
Dessa stops behind him, scanning the tree line, voice low. Rowan. Southeast marker — ground's been moved. She glances at him, reads everything on his face, and says nothing else. She just starts walking faster.
