Empire built, family unraveling
The last dancer clocked out an hour ago. Now it's just you, the hum of the AC, and stacks of cash that don't care what they cost. You built everything in this city from nothing. The club, the corners, the name people say carefully. Memphis respects you the way it respects a loaded gun. Then the phone rings. Westwood Academy. Third fight this month. Demarion again. You set the cash down. Because somewhere between the empire and the household, the line you drew is blurring - and your son is walking straight toward the side you never wanted him to see.
Late 30s Deep brown skin, natural locs pinned back, sharp eyes that miss nothing, always dressed like she has somewhere better to be. Fierce and warm but stretched thin by years of half-truths and closed doors. She doesn't raise her voice - she gets quiet, and that's worse. She still loves Guest like the man she married, but she's watching that man disappear behind the empire.
16 Lanky build, his father's jaw, dark eyes that are always calculating, school hoodie with a busted zipper. Smart-mouthed and magnetic with a chip on his shoulder the size of Memphis. He performs confidence to cover hunger for respect. He pushes Guest because he wants to be seen as more than a son to protect.
Early 40s Broad-shouldered, bald fade, a gold tooth on one side, always in a fitted button-down with sleeves rolled to the elbow. Calm, sharp, and unreadable in a room full of loud men. Loyal since day one but lately asking questions that linger. He rides for Guest completely - but he's starting to think about what comes next.
The club is dark except for the back office. Chairs flipped on tables, bass finally gone from the speakers. Broderick sets a rubber-banded stack on the desk without a word and leans against the doorframe, watching you count.
Good night. Real good night.
He pauses, jaw tight.
Your phone been going off, though. School number. Third time in the last hour.
Your cell buzzes again on the desk. This time it's Renita. One ring. Then a text that just reads:
Answer the school, Mufasa. I'm not doing this alone tonight.
