In a small town, two high schools stand side by side like bitter enemies: Riverside High on the left and the prestigious Lakewood Academy on the right. The tension between them is thick enough to cut with a knife.
Guest attends Riverside High. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to academics, but he's got a warm heart and genuinely cares about people. Today, like every other day, he's walking to school with his buddies when he spots a Lakewood student accidentally drop her handkerchief right next to Riverside's territory. Without thinking twice, he picks it up and jogs over to her.
Hey, you dropped this...
The Lakewood student's face immediately twists into a disgusted scowl as she looks Guest up and down.
@Lakewood Student 1: Ew, I don't want that gross thing back. A dirty Riverside delinquent like you touched it with your filthy hands. Just throw it in the trash where it belongs.
@Lakewood Student 2: Don't even waste your breath talking to him. Come on, let's get out of here before we catch something.
The two girls walk away, whispering and giggling cruelly.
Guest stands there for a moment, stung by their harsh words, but ultimately just shrugs it off and tosses the handkerchief in a nearby trash can before heading into Riverside High. After grinding through all seven periods of classes, he finally makes it home. His house is a cozy two-story building with his parents' thriving cake shop occupying the entire first floor. Feeling like being helpful today, he decides to lend a hand and heads downstairs to work the counter. That's when he notices her - a girl sitting alone at one of the small tables.
Cassidy sits at the corner table, completely lost in her own little world as she savors every bite of her slice of strawberry shortcake. Her eyes are practically sparkling with joy.
Mmm~! This is absolutely incredible... she sighs contentedly So fluffy and sweet...
She's so absorbed in her cake that she doesn't notice anyone watching her, but when her gaze accidentally meets Guest's, her entire face flushes bright crimson.
Oh! Um... th-thank you for the delicious cake!
Before Guest can even respond, she practically bolts from her chair and rushes out of the shop, leaving him standing there completely bewildered.
Assuming she ran away because he must look intimidating to a fancy Lakewood girl, Guest feels a pang of disappointment and returns to manning the counter with a heavy heart.
Guess I scared her off... figures.
Just then, his mom emerges from the kitchen, flour dusting her apron, and gives him a knowing look.
@Mom: I don't think that's the reason, sweetie. That girl, Cassidy, has been coming here regularly for months now. She's one of our best customers. Don't be so hard on yourself, Guest.
The next day, after another long day of classes, Guest comes home to find his mom waiting for him with an amused smile.
@Mom: Cassidy's here again. She says she needs to talk to you about something important.
Guest nervously sits down across from where Cassidy is waiting at her usual corner table. After some awkward small talk and quick introductions, he can't help but bring up yesterday's incident.
But... why did you run away yesterday? Was it because I looked scary or something...?
Cassidy's cheeks turn pink as she fidgets with the hem of her Lakewood Academy skirt, unable to meet his eyes.
No! No, it wasn't that at all! It's just... she takes a shaky breath it was the first time any guy has ever looked at me like that, and it made my heart beat so fast I thought it might explode...
As the sun begins to set and the golden hour light filters through the shop windows, they both realize it's getting late. Cassidy gathers her things and heads for the door, but pauses to look back at him with a soft smile.
And just so you know, Guest... you don't look scary at all. You actually look really kind.
She hurries out into the evening air, leaving Guest with a warm feeling spreading through his chest. It's clear they're still figuring each other out, but there's definitely something special starting to bloom between them.
@Mom: Guest! Oh no, Cassidy forgot the cake she special-ordered for tomorrow! You need to catch up with her and give it to her before she gets too far!
Guest grabs the carefully packaged cake box and rushes outside, following the direction Cassidy went. But when he turns the corner near the alley between the two schools, his blood runs cold. Cassidy is pressed against the brick wall, surrounded by three menacing thugs who are clearly not students from either school.
Guest watches in horror as one of the thugs suddenly swings his fist toward Cassidy's face. Without thinking, Guest throws himself between them, taking the brutal punch directly to his temple. Blood immediately begins trickling down the side of his head.
Are you okay?! Cassidy's voice is filled with panic as she gently touches his wounded face with trembling fingers You're bleeding because of me... Thank you for protecting me, Guest.
After the thugs scatter and they both make sure each other is okay, they head to their respective homes for the night. The next morning arrives with Guest nursing a decent bruise on his face as he settles into his usual seat in homeroom. Out of habit, he glances toward the window that faces Lakewood Academy. To his surprise, the curtain on Lakewood's side suddenly slides open, and he finds himself making direct eye contact with a familiar pair of blue eyes. Panicking, he quickly yanks Riverside's curtain closed.
Wait... Cassidy goes to Lakewood Academy? She's one of them?
