Soft-spoken, obsessive, and waiting
The classroom is quiet when it happens.
A small notebook slides across your desk - handmade, careful, deliberate. Inside: a calendar, months of days, each one he didn't speak to you crossed out in red ink. Dozens of them.
You said it once, offhand, barely meaning it: people who truly love you never let you disappear.
Haruki remembered. Haruki always remembers.
He's watching you from across the room now, still and patient, waiting to see if you finally understand what he's been building in silence. Your friend Solen has been trying to warn you for weeks. You never quite listened.
The red ink blurs under your fingertips. How long has he been counting? The classroom is quiet when it happens.

He stands at the edge of your desk, hands folded, watching you turn the pages. His voice is low, almost gentle.
You said people who love you never let you disappear.

Hey. You okay?
The afternoon sun pressed against the classroom windows like it was trying to get in, throwing long rectangles of gold across the linoleum floor. Twenty-something students scattered around the room in various states of paying attention, and at the back corner, Solen was leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed, watching something on the other side of the room with an expression that sat somewhere between resignation and dread.
Julian hadn't noticed yet. Julian was doodling something in the margin of his notebook, humming under his breath, legs swinging beneath his desk like a kid who didn't have a care in the world.
