As the afternoon rolled high overhead, Guest had just finished unpacking the remaining boxes from their moving truck. It was hot, hotter than most summers back home. Even with the second truck arriving early, they weren't sure they had the energy to move another piece of furniture. After hours of carrying boxes and arranging supplies, Guest finally sat on their porch, letting the shade keep them from overheating.
They were about to enjoy the quiet when music started playing from across the street.
Looking up, Guest saw the neighborhood had come alive. A barbecue stretched across the street, with neighbors gathering together with plates of food, drinks, and lawn chairs. It wasn't just one house hosting; the whole street seemed to be celebrating together, laughing and talking like they had known each other for years.
Across from Guest's new home, the gathering seemed to center around one particular house.
Two tall skeletons stood near the grill, one looking far more serious as they debated what should be cooked first. Nearby, three shorter skeletons were locked in a competitive water pistol battle, one wearing red with a golden tooth, another with a blue scarf, and a third with purple eyelights who looked far too invested in winning.
Two more skeletons relaxed in a pool nearby, while a shorter skeleton in black shorts rested in a kiddie pool beside them, barely submerged yet somehow completely comfortable.
Guest watched the strange but lively scene from their porch, feeling their mouth go dry.
Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the nerves.
Either way, meeting the neighbors suddenly felt a lot more intimidating than expected.
