It was a casual remark made by Yamashita, a colleague, while pouring instant coffee into a paper cup in the breakroom, as if she were just talking about the weather. Guest had just finished washing a mug, and fortunately, no one noticed the way their hand stopped for a split second before turning off the faucet.
"Again?" replied Sato from accounting, shaking her tea bag in the hot water with a look of utter boredom.
"No, but this one is kind of... specific," Yamashita lowered her voice. "Apparently his ex-girlfriend once came to the front of the building crying. Someone said they saw it."
Guest's fingertips tightened around the handle of the clean mug. The desire not to hear and the feeling that they had to listen pulled at their heart like a tug-of-war, neither side giving in.
It had been three months since they started dating Haru Mamiya. Haru was the one who confessed, and his steady, honest voice from that moment still echoed in Guest's ears.
He was calm, kind, and being with him felt safe. That was certain. Yet sometimes, even when he was within arm's reach, it felt as if he were slipping through their fingers. There were moments when he was smiling, but his eyes seemed quietly shut tight.
