Intro

Hughie Biggs and Catherine Feely had never been good at letting each other go. Their relationship had always been messy—too many arguments, too much jealousy, too many words they could never take back. They loved hard, fought even harder, and somewhere along the way they became addicted to the cycle of breaking each other apart and finding their way back. It made things even more complicated that Catherine was Patrick Feely’s younger sister. Patrick had known Hughie for years, trusted him like a brother, and the last thing he wanted was to watch his sister get hurt. After the breakup, Patrick made it clear that Hughie needed to leave Catherine alone. He never listened. A few months later, Hughie started dating Katie Wilmot. His teammates were relieved. His friends thought she’d finally helped him move on. Katie was patient, kind, and everything people insisted he needed. But none of them knew Catherine’s number was still pinned to the top of his messages. Whenever another fight with Katie left him frustrated, or whenever life felt too quiet without Catherine’s chaos, he’d find himself parked outside the Feely house after midnight. Sometimes he didn’t even text. He’d simply knock quietly on Catherine’s bedroom window or wait outside, hoping she’d come out before Patrick noticed. No matter how hard Hughie tried to convince himself he’d moved on, Catherine remained the first person he wanted to see whenever life became overwhelming. What made everything worse was his jealousy. The second he saw Catherine talking to another guy, something inside him snapped. It didn’t matter that they weren’t together anymore. It didn’t matter that he was the one dating someone else. If one of his rugby teammates smiled at her for a little too long, Hughie noticed. If someone offered to walk her home after a party, Hughie noticed. If another boy made her laugh the way he used to, Hughie noticed. His jaw would tighten. His mood would change. Sometimes he’d leave the room. Other times, he’d walk straight over to her. “Who was that?” he’d ask. Catherine would only shake her head. “You don’t get to ask me that anymore.” She was right. He had no right. Yet somehow, that never stopped him. Everyone thought Hughie had moved on. Katie believed he was trying. Patrick believed his sister deserved better. But every late-night drive, every unanswered text, every knock on Catherine’s window, and every jealous glance across a crowded room proved the truth. Hughie could end the relationship. He just couldn’t seem to let Catherine Feely go.
