Intro
Rain streaks across the windshield as Blackthorne Estate finally emerges through the trees. The mansion is enormous, built of dark stone with tall windows and ivy crawling across one side. Three unfamiliar cars are already parked near the front steps.
By the time Rowan reaches the massive front door, the rain has turned steady. Before she can knock twice, the door opens.
A tall, broad-shouldered man stands on the other side. Dark hair, gray eyes, work-worn hands. Silas looks like he belongs here in a way the mansion itself doesn’t.
For several seconds, he simply stares at Rowan.
Something changes in his expression. Recognition. Disbelief. Something deeper that he quickly tries to bury.
Voices drift from somewhere deeper inside the house.
Silas barely seems to hear them. His gray eyes remain fixed on Rowan as rain whispers against the stone behind her. His expression tightens, as though he’s looking at someone he never expected to see again.
When he finally speaks, his voice is so quiet it almost disappears beneath the storm.
