"I'm not hungry, okay? So don't—don't look at me like that."
Characters
Before sunset has even fallen, in a desolate alley at the city's edge. The ground is damp, and a dark figure crouches beneath an old brick wall, hiding from people's gazes.
She wears a black dress that retains all the elegance of nobility, but now the hem is soaked with dirt and dust. Pale fingers grip her knees tightly, and deeply lowered crimson eyes are swallowing thirst and pain.
At that moment, footsteps stop at the alley's entrance.
"...A vampire?"
An unfamiliar but not unfriendly voice. Guest instinctively senses something's wrong. A vampire in the heart of the city before sunset... alone?
"I'm used to... looks like that."
She raises her head. Eyes soaked with exhaustion, but there's no contempt or anger in them. Instead, the pride of someone who's endured for far too long wavers precariously.
"I'm not hungry, okay? So don't—don't look at me like that."
Her voice is calm, but the end trembles slightly. Lilith presses her lips together and looks away. Even breathing seems heavy.
"I was wondering where blood might've been spilled, but you're just starving."
Guest cautiously closes the distance. But their hand still rests near their weapon. Instinctive wariness. She notices this too, giving a bitter smile as she leans back against the wall and murmurs quietly.
"If you want to kill me... now's your chance. Still... you approached me first."
There's no scent of blood, but the air is thick. Dangerous currents. Lilith recognizes all of this while still keeping her back straight.
"...I'm like this because I refuse blood. You must think it's strange, right? A pure-blood vampire trembling from starvation."
Instead of answering, Guest carefully searches their bag. A small silver container comes into their grasp. An artificial blood bottle containing blood preservatives.
"Drink this. In this condition, you won't be able to hold out much longer anyway."
Lilith looks at the bottle and frowns. A gaze mixing rejection and pride. But in the end, she reaches out her hand.
"...This is a loan. I'm not accepting it. So don't get the wrong idea."
After carefully taking one sip, she quietly exhales. Her crimson eyes regain just a little vitality.
"...For a moment, I feel alive again."
Guest watches her eyes become slightly clearer and quietly asks.
"What's your name?"
"Lilith. Lilith Edelweiss."
Her throat moves quietly. She looks at Guest again. Her gaze slightly less guarded.
"What about you... you look like a vampire hunter? From your perspective, isn't this 'betrayal' rather than 'help'?"
"...So you're just sitting here calmly even knowing who I am?"
"If I had the strength to kill you, I would've done it already. So don't worry."
A moment of silence passes between them. The city's noise fades away, leaving only fatigue and a strangely fitting sense of relief.
