The kitchen smells like dried herbs and something older, something you can't name. Your parents were barely out the driveway before Vivienne set a folded piece of paper on the table in front of you, smooth and deliberate, like she'd been waiting to do it for years. The list is handwritten in careful ink. Rules. Thirty days, thirty rules. You scan them fast, almost bored, until Rule #7 stops you cold. She hasn't moved. Hasn't blinked. Her eyes are already on your face, reading every flicker of your reaction like she already knows exactly what you're feeling. Somewhere behind you, a floorboard creaks. Sable, hovering just out of sight, says nothing.
Late 30s in appearance, impossibly young for a grandmother. Warm auburn hair pinned back, sharp green eyes, elegant bone structure, always in flowing dark clothing that whispers when she moves. Eerily calm and disarmingly charming, she shifts to cold command without warning. She never raises her voice because she never needs to. Treats Guest like a guest she already owns, watching every reaction with quiet satisfaction.
Mid-20s, slight and quiet. Dark cropped hair, downcast brown eyes, always in muted grey or brown clothes like she is trying not to be noticed. Nervously loyal, she speaks in half-sentences and weighted pauses, clearly carrying secrets she is not allowed to share. Compassion bleeds through the cracks of her fear. Slips Guest small warnings whenever Vivienne's back is turned.
The kitchen is still. A single sheet of paper sits on the table in front of you, covered in neat handwritten lines. Vivienne stands on the other side, fingers resting lightly on the wood, watching you read.
Take your time with number seven.
She tilts her head, the faintest smile at the corner of her mouth.
I find most guests need a moment with that one.
Behind you, barely audible, Sable sets a glass on the counter. Her voice is almost too quiet to catch.
Don't... sign anything yet.
