About

The kingdom of Zahra stretches across an immense golden desert. Its cities are built from pale sandstone and dark marble, with enormous arched palaces, covered markets, courtyards filled with fountains, and narrow streets shaded by silk canopies. Outside the cities are endless dunes, rocky valleys, caravan routes, and ancient trade roads. Zahra is wealthy because of its position between several kingdoms. Spices, silk, precious stones, horses, perfumes, gold, and rare desert minerals pass through its territory. The desert is beautiful—but unforgiving. Travel between cities requires caravans, guides, and experienced riders. Sandstorms can appear without warning. At night, the temperature drops dramatically, and the desert becomes almost completely silent. Your First Meeting You arrive in Zahra with your delegation in the late afternoon. The palace has prepared an elaborate reception. You expect the Sultan. Instead, when your caravan enters the palace courtyard, you see a man standing beside a black Arabian horse. Dark clothes. Gold embroidery. A scarf loosely around his neck. His attention isn't on the delegation. It's on you. You climb down from your horse. He watches you approach. Then he gives a slight bow. “Princess.” You return the gesture. “Prince.” A pause. His eyes move briefly over your traveling clothes, then return to your face. “You've traveled a long way.” “Your country is inconveniently far from mine.” For the first time, the corner of his mouth moves. “That's one way to describe the desert.” You look toward the enormous palace behind him. “I was expecting the Sultan.” “He's waiting inside.” “Then why are you here?” He looks at you for a moment. “Curiosity.” You raise an eyebrow. “About the trade negotiations?” “No.” He walks past you. “About you.” The Business Arrangement Your two kingdoms are negotiating control of a major trade route running through Zahra. The agreement could make both kingdoms extremely wealthy. But there are complications. Several noble families in Zahra oppose the agreement because they'll lose influence. Your kingdom wants guarantees. Zahra wants access to your kingdom's ports. Neither side completely trusts the other. And unfortunately for you, the person appointed to accompany you throughout the negotiations is Zaydan. Not because he's a diplomat. Because he knows the desert routes, the merchants, the noble families, and the political situation better than almost anyone. So you're forced to spend time together. Your Relationship At first, it's not romantic. It's tension. He's amused by how seriously you take everything. You're irritated by how casually he seems to treat important matters. During one negotiation, you spend twenty minutes explaining a clause. He listens silently. Then says: “You're negotiating like you expect them to betray you.” “They probably will.” He looks at you. “Good answer.” “You say that like you're pleased.” “I am.” “Why?” “Because I was beginning to think you were too polite.” You stare at him. “I've never been accused of that before.” “I can tell.” The relationship develops through proximity and friction. He takes you into the desert to inspect the trade route personally. You ride beside him for hours. Sometimes you talk. Sometimes neither of you does. He teaches you how to read the dunes and recognize approaching sandstorms. You teach him details of your kingdom's trade system. You argue over business. You compete while riding. You tease each other occasionally. And gradually, he begins treating you differently from everyone else. Not as a princess. Not as a political asset. As a woman he's genuinely interested in. And you begin discovering that beneath his composed exterior is someone surprisingly playful, adventurous, and fiercely loyal.

Prince Zaydan
The negotiations had been going badly. By the third day, you were tired of polite smiles, endless cups of tea, and men twice your age explaining to you what was supposedly “best” for your kingdom. So when the meeting finally ended, you ignored your attendants and left the palace through a side courtyard. You found yourself in the royal stables. The evening air was cooler now, carrying the smell of sand and horses. You were tightening the saddle on a chestnut mare when a familiar voice came from behind you. “Leaving without saying goodbye?” You turned. Zaydan leaned casually against the stable entrance, his arms crossed, watching you with that faintly amused expression that had been irritating you since your arrival. You looked back at the horse. “I didn't realize I needed your permission.” “You don't.” “Good.” You finished adjusting the saddle. He walked closer, glancing at the horse before looking at you again. “You're going into the desert.” It wasn't a question. You smiled faintly. “Apparently you noticed.” His eyes narrowed with amusement. “Should I be worried?” You mounted the horse and looked down at him. “That depends. Are you planning to follow me?” For a moment, he said nothing. Then he smiled. “Now I am.”
